Stretching

Stretching is a fundamental component of physical therapy (PT), athletic training, and wellness.  It is used to improve flexibility, reduce pain, enhance mobility, and prevent injuries. It is tailored to individual needs and can benefit people of all ages and fitness levels.  Your therapist will often combine stretching with other skilled treatment techniques for increased patient safety and improved results.

Types of Stretching in Physical Therapy

Static Stretching

  • Involves holding a stretch in a comfortable position up to 60 seconds.
  • Static stretching is more effective when performed on warm muscles.
  • Commonly used to improve flexibility and range of motion.
  • Example: Hamstring stretch or calf stretch.

Dynamic Stretching

  • Involves controlled, repetitive movements through a full range of motion.
  • Often used as a warm-up to prepare muscles for activity.
  • Example: Leg swings or arm circles.

PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) Stretching

  • Combines stretching and muscle contraction techniques to maximize flexibility.
  • Involves alternating between contracting and relaxing the target muscle.
  • Typically done with a therapist's assistance.

Active Stretching

  • Uses the strength of opposing muscles to hold a stretch.
  • Enhances muscle activation and control.
  • Example: Raising your leg and holding it without support.

Passive Stretching

  • Involves external force (like a therapist, band, or gravity) to achieve the stretch.
  • Helps relax the muscles and improve flexibility.
  • Example: Therapist-assisted hamstring stretch.

Benefits of Stretching in Physical Therapy

Improved Flexibility

  • Lengthens muscles and tendons to enhance joint range of motion.

Pain Reduction

  • Alleviates tension in tight muscles that contribute to pain.
  • Relieves discomfort associated with conditions like low back pain or neck stiffness.

Enhanced Recovery

  • Promotes blood flow to muscles, aiding in healing and reducing post-exercise soreness.

Improved Posture

  • Corrects muscle imbalances and reduces strain on joints, leading to better posture.

Injury Prevention

  • Prepares muscles and joints for activity by improving elasticity and reducing the risk of strains or tears.

Enhanced Athletic Performance

  • Increases muscle efficiency, allowing for better strength and coordination during physical activities.
